As the church we’ve failed in our mission when situations like this exist. Jesus told His followers in Matthew 25:34-40:
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me,I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
I’m not saying that we aren’t meeting any needs. We are. But I see way too many instances of a Christian donating a vast amount of money to another Christian’s fundraiser or organization while they drive right by the “least of these” that are asking for money and food under an underpass.
The truth is, I’m guilty of this as well. Especially when I’m with my family. Blame it on the news networks and hollywood, but I’ve seen too many instances of pulling over for someone turn out badly. That doesn’t excuse me though. It makes feel unsafe and uncomfortable, yes, but I am still called as part of Jesus’ bride to meet the needs.
Government organizations and non-profits can use the excuse that “there’s no way to help every single person that needs it,” but the Church can’t. We’re not given an option. To minister to Jesus, we have to minister to the least of these.
So that’s my challenge to myself today. Find those in need and give them help.
Where are you at on this? Who are the least of these in your life? What are you going to DO about it?
